On October 24, Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with the participants of the 3rd SDG Dialogue “Results of the 2023 Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit and the role of supreme audit institutions in the implementation of the SDGs” held in Baku.

Day.Az reports that the speaker, who expressed his satisfaction at welcoming the guests to the Parliament of Azerbaijan, noted that the event held in Baku on “The role of Supreme Audit Institutions in the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals” was dedicated to the actual topic. The Speaker expressed his belief that this event will contribute to both the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals and the strengthening of cooperation between these audit institutions.

Sahiba Gafarova said that in our modern era, the world is facing many problems and challenges, and serious obstacles are emerging for countries. In this sense, the “2030 Sustainable Development Agenda” and the Sustainable Development Goals adopted within the framework of the UN in 2015 are important tools designed for the socio-economic sustainable development of countries and the systematic solution of the problems they face.

The speaker noted that Azerbaijan is consistently working towards the implementation of the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. Suffice it to say that Azerbaijan is the first in its region and one of the first 12 countries in the world to submit three Voluntary National Review Reports to the UN. Parliament also makes necessary changes to the legislation for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The speaker said that the cooperation of audit institutions in the dialogue format organized in Baku is particularly relevant. This is important in terms of purposeful use of public funds in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as increasing transparency and ensuring accountability.

The chairman of the Milli Majlis highly appreciated the activity of the Accounts Chamber in Azerbaijan and its cooperation with the parliament. He drew attention to the fact that Palatanna’s participation in the budget process as a supreme audit body that provides an annual report to the Milli Majlis, operates permanently, and carries out external state financial control is a special direction of its cooperation with the parliament.

The speaker noted that after our country liberated its territories from the 30-year occupation of Armenia, major reconstruction and restoration works are currently being carried out in these territories. “Smart city” and “smart village” projects are being implemented. The construction of the third airport in these areas is nearing completion. This process is also closely related to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, and here too the Accountability Chamber has a great responsibility.

Sahiba Gafarova pointed out that the burying of more than 1 million landmines by Armenia over 30 years in these areas hinders the ongoing work and these mines cause human casualties. Although Azerbaijan offered Armenia to sign a peace treaty, there is still no result. We believe that the signing of this peace agreement will have an impact on the development of the entire South Caucasus.

At the meeting, the heads of the Chambers of Accounts of Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, Brazil and Belarus Metin Yener, Almazbek Akmatov, Walton Alenkar Rodriguez and Dmitry Basko expressed their satisfaction with being in Azerbaijan. They expressed their gratitude to the Azerbaijani side for organizing the 3rd SDG Dialogue at a high level in our country. It was stated that the results of such meetings and the exchange of mutual experience will be useful for the future activities of audit institutions. The guests conveyed their congratulations on the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Great Leader Heydar Aliyev in Azerbaijan this year.

Then, the chairman of the Accounting Chamber of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Vugar Gulmammadov, who participated in the meeting, expressed his gratitude for the organization of the meeting and expressed his belief that the event held in Baku will make a valuable contribution to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
