Saint-Malo: justice authorizes little Hades to keep his first name

by time news

He will be called Hades, as his parents wished. Kristina and Rodrigo have the right to call their son Hades, the Saint-Malo court confirmed this Friday, reports France Bleu Armorique. The child was born on September 19, 2022 in Saint-Malo, Ille-et-Vilaine.

At first, the city court opposed this name, Hades being the name of the Greek god of death and the underworld. The choice of the first name made a civil registrar wince: the Saint-Malo prosecutor then asked for the first name to be deleted from the child’s birth certificate, as it was deemed contrary to his interests.

The parents, themselves, explained that they found the first name “pretty” and that it has the advantage of being pronounced the same way in French and in Spanish, the father being Colombian. The couple stubbornly defended their choice.

A first name given 12 times in France in 2020

“Personally, I haven’t studied Greek mythology and I don’t believe in any of that. I come from a Christian family and that didn’t shock them. “The couple did not understand the decision of the prosecution, especially since the first name Hades has already been given 12 times in France in 2020 alone.

Kristina and Rodrigo therefore seized a family court judge, who considered that the first name was legal. Eight months after birth, the baby therefore has the right to keep his first name. “It’s a sigh of relief,” reacted her mother, delighted with the court decision. As a last resort, the Saint-Malo public prosecutor’s office could appeal the decision.
