Saint Martin: A 72-Hour Escape for the Soul

Saint Martin, a unique island shared by Dutch and French rule, offers a seamless blend of paradise perfect for a rejuvenating “micro-travel” experience. This destination provides a potent dose of sunshine, culinary delights, and cultural immersion without requiring extensive time away from daily life.

Saint Martin warmly welcomes Black travelers, offering a sense of belonging alongside its vibrant flavors, music, and rich culture. In just three days, visitors can indulge in luxurious experiences deeply rooted in the Caribbean spirit.

Day 1: Touchdown and Island Bliss

Upon arrival, a visit to the Beach Bar at Driftwood in Maho is a quintessential Saint Martin welcome. “Nothing says, ‘Welcome to Saint Martin’ like sipping the island’s best rum punch while airplanes roar just overhead,” one traveler described. It’s a vibrant and fun way to unwind after a journey.

For a different pace, a stay at Aura in Anse Marcel offers a tranquil retreat. The writer chose this quiet northern cove for its peaceful beach and stunning views. “My one-bedroom villa was tucked into the lush mountains with views of the ocean and rolling hills. The light, the stillness, the design… it felt like the island wrapped its arms around me. Inspired. Held. At peace,” she shared.

Day 2: Letting the Island Lead the Way

An early start at Enochs in Marigot is essential for a still-warm johnnycake, a local pastry. The day unfolded unexpectedly when the owners of Pyrates, a gourmet boat charter, offered a last-minute spot on their sail. This serendipitous moment highlighted a key aspect of the Saint Martin experience: “Saint Martin plans your day for you… just show up and whisper, ‘Okay, God. I see you.’”

The sail included a lavish breakfast of croissants, fruit, cheeses, and prosecco. A journey to Anguilla followed, with swimming in turquoise waters and a champagne stop at Cap de Luca. Lunch onboard featured lobster and Tomahawk steak, a true “gourmet heaven.”

The day culminated at the 5th Annual Saint Martin Food Festival and its BBQ competition, described as a “pure family reunion” with music, dancing, and a performance by Haitian artist Kai. The writer is already anticipating the 2026 festival.

Day 3: Tranquility and Island Exploration

The day began with fresh coconut water and a visit to Loterie Farm, a 135-acre eco-sanctuary. Early arrival allows for meditation before relaxing by the pool.

Further exploration included a stop at Guavaberry for local rum, Spicy Milo for Caribbean spices, and Talk of the Town in Grand Case for authentic local cuisine. Beach-hopping followed, visiting Rainbow, Friar’s Bay, Mullet Bay, and finally returning to the serenity of Anse Marcel. The evening concluded with a Michelin-level dining experience at La Villa Hibiscus, a fitting culinary finale.

Saint Martin offers a rare balance of activity and relaxation, with 37 beaches, exceptional food, and welcoming locals. It truly embodies the “micro-travel dream.”
