San Ramón Nonato, back in Spain, was named Cardinal by Pope Gregory IX. The saint assumed his position with simplicity and continued to live with the same evangelizing spirit that he had always had. Although he was a prince of the Church, he dressed simply and never left his poor cell in the Barcelona convent.
As Cardinal he was summoned to Rome by the Pope. Ramón undertook the trip, but upon reaching Cardona, about ten kilometers from Barcelona, he was surprised by a violent fever that took his life. The good “unborn” left for the Father’s House on August 31, 1240, at only 36 years of age. That day he was born for eternal life.
