As Peter’s successor, León stood out for being a great shepherd, always attentive to the needs of his flock. He was also a fervent preacher, famous for his homilies on special liturgical dates, and a prolific writer. His letters to Christians in the peripheries of the West are a good example of his skillful pen. Many of his sermons and letters are preserved, considered authentic doctrinal treasures.

“He who loves God is content to please him, because the greatest reward we can desire is love itself; love, in fact, comes from God, in such a way that God himself is love,” wrote Pope Leo in one of his sermons. For León, the Christian life can be interpreted as an invitation to snatch the greatest prize, which is God himself; Consequently, holiness must be the natural purpose of life, since there is nothing desired more than true love.

During his 21 years of pontificate (440 – 461), the saint worked incessantly for the unity and integrity of the Church. He fought against some very dangerous heresies such as “Nestorianism”, which affirms that in Jesus there are two separate persons, one divine and the other human; “monophysitism”, which maintains that in Christ there is only divine nature; “Manicheism”, which says that the spirit of man is from God and the body from the devil; and “Pelagianism”, which maintains that original sin is not such and therefore redemption is obtained by individual merit, without the need for grace – which would make the redemption accomplished by Christ useless.
