Wildfires Threaten Sakarya and Bilecik Provinces, Evacuations Underway

A rapidly spreading wildfire, originating in the forested areas near Taraklı district of Sakarya, has jumped to the neighboring province of Bilecik, prompting widespread concern and a large-scale response effort. Authorities are optimistic about containing the blaze by morning, but continue to battle the flames with both aerial and ground crews.

Ongoing Containment Efforts

Firefighters and emergency personnel are working tirelessly to control the wildfire, which initially broke out in the Hacıyakup Paşalar woods of Sakarya. The fire quickly spread, reaching the Gölpazarı district of Bilecik. The Forest Regional Directorate has deployed significant resources, utilizing both air tankers and ground teams to combat the blaze.

A senior official stated that all relevant teams – including forestry personnel, the AFAD disaster relief agency, and law enforcement – were mobilized immediately and remain on the scene. “We do not have a loss of life and property for us. This is a very pleasing event for us,” the official confirmed, adding that displaced animals have been placed in shelters.

Governor Sözer Expresses Optimism, Highlights Regional Support

Bilecik Governor Faik Oktay Sözer addressed the public from the Coordination Center, providing an update on the situation. He expressed confidence that the fire would be largely under control by the following morning, contingent on favorable wind conditions.

“The probability of being controlled in the morning is very high,” Governor Sözer said. He also acknowledged the crucial support being provided by neighboring provinces, praising the “selfless work” of all involved. “I hope until the morning, especially the wind of the rest of these hours, we are happy. In this context is very likely to be controlled against the morning.” He added that efforts would shift to establishing firebreaks once the immediate threat is contained.

Mass Evacuations and Animal Welfare

Approximately 300 citizens have been evacuated from areas threatened by the fire, along with nearly 500 head of livestock – including both bovine and ovine animals. Authorities have ensured safe relocation for those displaced, with most finding shelter with relatives, in secondary residences, or in district dormitories.

“We do not have any problems about being transferred,” a spokesperson confirmed, emphasizing the smooth coordination of the evacuation process. The focus remains on protecting both human life and animal welfare as the firefighting operation continues.

The situation remains fluid, but authorities are cautiously optimistic that the wildfire will be brought under control in the coming hours, preventing further damage and ensuring the safety of local communities.
