Three armed men were killed during a clash with a unit of the gendarmerie, supported by military aviation this Saturday morning in a remote area of ​​the wilaya of Adrar, in the north of Mauritania.

A gendarme was killed during this clash with the armed men, who are believed to be the four Al Qaeda prisoners who escaped from Nouakchott prison and who were being pursued by Mauritanian security.

The clash made it possible to put out of harm’s way three of the armed men while the fourth surrendered.

The fighting took place in the area of ​​LEMSAYDI, within the municipality of Aoujeft, after information gathered reporting the presence of a suspicious vehicle in this area which would have had technical problems.

An elite unit of the national gendarmerie supported by the 1st commando battalion and the Mauritanian air force, neutralized this Saturday morning, four prisoners of Al-Qaeda escaped last Sunday evening from the civil prison of Nouakchott.

The operation which was launched on Saturday around 10 a.m. made it possible to put out of harm’s way 3 of the four prisoners who had escaped.
