On July 13, 2024, the Salamis Shipyards delivered the 5 pre-equipped blocks of the second- and fifth-production French FDI frigate, built at the Salamis Shipyards, and are already traveling from Greece to the Naval Group shipyard in Lorient , where they will be delivered to follow the next steps of the frigate’s construction.

The delivery of these parts for the French frigate is an important milestone both for the Salamina Shipyards and for the Greek shipbuilding defense industry as a whole. Is the first time in history which Greek shipyard participates through the FDI program in the construction of a high-tech warship for the naval fleet of another country.

The cooperation with the Naval Group foresees the participation of the shipyards in the construction of the FDI frigates, both of the Greek Navy and the French Navy, for five pre-equipped sections (blocks) of the hull and the superstructure, up to a total of 6 FDI frigates.

Already in February of this year, Salamis Shipyards delivered the 5 pre-equipped blocks of the third Greek FDI HN Formion, which are already in the Naval shipyard in Lorient, France for the construction of the Greek frigate. In addition, recently the Shipyards of Salamis extended the cooperation with Naval for the construction project of the third French frigate that follows.

The project, in addition to cutting, shaping, assembling, welding and erecting the sections, also requires the manufacture, installation and alignment of critical equipment for the operational profile of the frigates, with absolute fidelity to the specifications.

Thus, in addition to the construction of the sectors with a special high-demand steel alloy DH36, NAVAL GROUP entrusted the construction of key systems, such as the base of the main gun, the bow thruster, the helicopter hangar, and their peripheral systemsamong others, at the Salamina Shipyards, which fully completed the project, which proves the completely successful transfer of technology and the specialized knowledge and capabilities of the Salamina Shipyards.

It is worth noting that the percentage of completeness of the pre-fitting of the blocks achieved by the Salamina shipyards reaches 80.4% a rate that is among the highest ever achieved, as sources with full knowledge of the shipbuilding processes pointed out.

“For the first time Greece is exporting a defense product of this size”

“We have delivered 5 cetus blocks for the second French FDI frigate following the 5 blocks built at our shipyard and delivered to Naval Group for the construction of the third Greek FDI HN Formion. Recently, our shipyards extended the cooperation with the Naval Group for the construction project of the third French frigate that follows. Let’s hope that soon we will participate in the construction of the 4th Greek FDI. We feel particularly proud to participate in the FDI frigate program which is a turning point for the Greek shipbuilding industry, as for the first time Greece exports a defense product of this size” he said on the occasion of the delivery of the blocks CEO of Salamina Shipyards Mr. G. Koros.

The combination of the many years of knowledge and experience of the Salamina Shipyards in demanding and specialized projects and the know-how transferred to Greece by the Naval Group for a project of high technology and requirements that until now had not existed in our country, now consolidates special knowledge and skills with the similar certifications that the Salamina Shipyards now have.

Salamina Shipyards is a specially designed, modern and flexible shipbuilding unit, which has been active internationally in new constructions and specialized projects for over 40 years.

They have carried out pioneering projects at a pan-European and global level in the field of commercial shipping and the defense of both Greece and other NATO member states.
