The State Minister of Labor and Employment said that the March salary and Eid bonus will be paid to the garment workers before the holy Eid-ul-Fitr holiday. Nazrul Islam Chowdhury.
He said this in his office at the secretariat on Wednesday (March 20) after the 17th meeting of the tripartite advisory council related to the RMG sector.
The state minister said that the owners and labor leaders have discussed in such a cordial atmosphere that we do not think that any kind of labor dissatisfaction or any incident will happen in view of the coming Eid. Their problems are solved. We will take effective measures to resolve those which are not resolved. We hope the discussions have been fruitful.
Not a single word was uttered in the tripartite meeting. We talked in a cordial atmosphere. We have taken the decisions together with the three parties. I hope that in the light of these decisions, the next Eid will be auspicious and beautiful, the state minister said.
The state minister said that no worker can be retrenched before Eid, this is our strict instruction. No one can be laid off before Eid.
When asked when the salary, Eid bonus will be paid, Nazrul Islam said, it will be done. Salary and bonus will be given to workers before Eid holiday. No specific date has been set. We do not know when the owner of an industry will be able to pay and when he will not be able to pay. We said it should be paid before the Eid holiday.
The state minister also said that the garment factory owners and workers’ representatives have agreed on the decision to pay salaries and bonuses.
He also said that Industrial Police, Labor Department, Factory and Institution Inspection Department and intelligence agencies will work in the field in coordination.
Nazrul Islam said that there is a demand to give ration to garment workers, I will try it. I strongly believe that if the Prime Minister is informed about this, he will accept it. We will arrange rationing for the workers, God willing. I hope to launch it as soon as possible.
Regarding attending the International Labor Organization (ILO) Governing Board meeting, the State Minister said that the Law Minister and I spoke there. They accepted our demand. They accepted it by voting. Most countries especially Muslim countries voted for us. I think it’s a huge win for us.
