16th International Women’s Film Festival of Salé Opens in Salé, Morocco
The 16th International Women’s Film Festival of Salé kicked off in the Moroccan city of Salé from November 13 to 18. Organized by the Bouregreg Association under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, the festival provides a platform for women filmmakers from Africa, the Arab world, and beyond to discuss issues related to cinema and gender.
At the opening ceremony, Noureddine Chemaou, president of the Bouregreg Association, highlighted the festival’s significance in showcasing the vitality of the cultural scene in Salé and the potential of cinema to promote tolerance, peace, and dialogue.
The festival coincides with the launch of a revision of Morocco’s Family Code, and organizers emphasized its commitment to highlighting the achievements of Moroccan women. Regional and local officials also lauded the festival’s contribution to the national and international influence of the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region and the development of a local film industry.
The event features a diverse program of screenings, tributes, and discussions focusing on women’s voices in cinema. It also pays tribute to pioneering female filmmakers from Morocco and other countries.
The festival’s jury members, chaired by renowned actresses Nastassja Kinski and Fatima Ezzahra Jaouhari, will assess entries in the feature film, documentary film, and young audience categories.
The opening ceremony was attended by artists, critics, and intellectuals, and was followed by a screening of the Moroccan short film “Ressources Humaines.”
The 16th International Women’s Film Festival of Salé is a collaborative effort between the Bouregreg Association, the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra Region, the Salé Prefectural Council, the Salé Municipality, and the Moroccan Cinematographic Center.
