We are moving towards the full restoration of the operation of the Manfredi Pier of the Porto Of Salerno, after the ban on 7 November due to the collapse of part of the extension of the quay. A failure that did not affect the entire extension of the Molo Manfredi, approximately 170 meters long, but a section approximately 50 meters long. The structural elements of the crowning beam are not involved. The consolidation work on part of the extension will be completed this afternoon.

The causes of the failure

The Port System Authority of Central Tyrrhenian Sea thanks the port authorities Of Salerno “for the synergy and collaboration implemented”. The failure, explains the ADSP, was caused by undermining at the foot of the containment works of the quay. All due to the turbulence generated by the thrusters of the cruise ships mooring at the quay where the Maritime Station is located. These turbulences, “absolutely natural” assures the Port Authority, have led over time to a lowering of the seabed, which went from -11 to -15 metres. The consequence was a weakening of the quay foot which induced the emptying of the filling material.

The restoration

After making the area safe, the restoration work on the affected section was arranged. The quay front subject to consolidation is approximately 50 meters long, then extended up to 75 meters to ensure further stability and safety of the restoration work. The works, carried out after the necessary technical checks which allowed an appraisal to be drawn up for the intervention, were carried out between 7 and 10 November. The restoration consisted in the creation of a reservoir made of arid material, coming from the quarry, appropriately positioned to protect the fixed portion of the sheet piles.
