Sales of new cars in Russia fell by 63.1% in January

In January, sales of new cars in Russia decreased by 63.1% compared to January 2022, according to the website of the Association of European Businesses (AEB). A total of 32,499 new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) were sold.

At the same time, the best-selling models were cars of the brands Lada (17,468 units) and Chinese Haval (4,535 units) and Geely (3,501 units). For comparison: in December 2022, the top 5 included Lada, UAZ, GAZ, Renault and Haval, while Geely was not among the leaders.

At the end of January 2022, the largest increase in percentage was shown by cars of the Chinese brand Great Wall (+371%, 278 cars sold against 59 in January last year), Geely (+88%), Dongfeng Motor Corporation (+66%) and Haval ( +43%).

At Lada, sales dipped by 3% yoy. Sales fell the most at Toyota, which sold 60 cars versus 6,126 last year (-99%), Hyundai (185 versus 11,356, -98%) and Lexus (5 versus 563, -99%).

The AEB statistics do not include sales figures for Mercedes, BMW and Chery as they do not disclose monthly sales figures.

Against the backdrop of the start of a special operation in Ukraine, some foreign car manufacturers announced the cessation of supplies to Russia, some companies also suspended the work of factories in the country. In particular, Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Infiniti, Hyundai, Nissan, Mazda, Toyota and others left the Russian market. Later, the Ministry of Industry and Trade included a number of automotive brands in the list of goods for parallel import, including BMW, Toyota, Land Rover, Jaguar and Rolls Royce.
