In Russia, sales of new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) in August amounted to 41,698 units, down 62.4% (69,172 units) compared to August 2021, according to data from the Association of European Businesses (AEB).
The domestic “AvtoVAZ”, which sold 18,087 Lada cars (-7% compared to August 2021). In total, since the beginning of 2022, the company has sold 103,124 vehicles (-59% compared to 2021).
Lexus lost the most sales again, by 99%, with only 16 cars sold in August 2022 (after 19 in July) compared to 1,957 cars in August last year. Land Rover also showed a significant drop – 18 (96% drop) in August, Porsche – 22 (-94%), Toyota — 221 (-97%) and others.
The only firm to post growth in both July and eight months of 2022 was Chinese automaker Dongfeng Motor Corporation (DFM). The company sold 280 vehicles in August 2022, a 172% increase compared to August 2021, and 1,096 vehicles were sold in just eight months, an increase of 612 compared to the same period last year. Another company that showed growth in August was the Chinese GAC Motor (+7% compared to August 2021, -40% YTD)
Sales of new passenger cars by the end of 2022 may fall by 28-55%, analysts of the consulting company Trust Technologies (PwC’s assignee in Russia) concluded earlier. In 2021, 1.514 million cars were sold in Russia, in the same year the final figures will depend on the macroeconomic situation and the preservation of state support measures.
If they continue, 1.09 million cars will be sold in Russia, of which 227,000 will be domestic brands, 688,000 will be Russian-made foreign cars, and 175,000 will be imported. With increased sanctions pressure, a worsening macroeconomic situation, a massive withdrawal of players from the market, a reduction in imports and a deterioration in logistics with the supply of components, sales may decrease by 50% or more.
