The Peace Prize of the German Book Trade 2023 goes to the writer Salman Rushdie. The author, who was born in Bombay (now Mumbai), combines “narrative foresight with constant literary innovation, humor and wisdom,” said the Peace Prize Foundation Council on Monday in Frankfurt am Main.

Because the Iranian Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa against him in 1989, he lives in constant danger. Shortly before the publication of his latest novel “Victory City” in August 2022, Rushdie was injured in an attack.

“Nevertheless, he is still one of the most passionate advocates of freedom of thought and language,” praised the Board of Trustees. The Peace Prize has been awarded since 1950 and is endowed with 25,000 euros. The award is traditionally presented on the last day of the Frankfurt Book Fair in Frankfurt’s Paulskirche. Last year the Ukrainian writer, translator and musician Serhij Zhadan was honored.
