Armed police in health centers, interruptions in care and requests for transfers by staff. This is the panorama of health services in Salvador, in a new episode of the security crisis faced by the government of Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT) in Bahia, with the increase in clashes between factions and police lethality.

According to the Municipal Health Secretariat, at least seven units of the municipal health network closed permanently this year, either due to incidents in the unit itself, such as robberies, or due to episodes of violence in the surrounding area, such as shootings.

Additionally, 13 health centers closed early or had long-term care suspended for more than a day due to conflicts in the surrounding area. This occurred in the Family Health Units (USFs) in Alto das Pombas and Calabar, neighborhoods that experienced shootings on the 4th of this month. On that occasion, classes were also suspended in schools and at the Federal University of Bahia (Ufba).

Since the beginning of the pandemic, cases of robberies and attacks against professionals have become frequent, according to the Union of Municipal Servants (Sindseps), but the situation has worsened in recent months. “This year we began to see a routine of robberies, an increase in robberies, thefts of mobile phones and other objects at the doors and inside the units,” comments Bruno Carianha, director of Sindseps.
