Sam the muskox – which a few years ago became known for persistently visiting villa gardens and cowsheds – has been euthanized, reports SVT Nyheter Jämtland.

It was last week that the association Myskoxcentrum received a call from a private person that Sam was moving in a strange way. A few days later, gamekeepers were able to determine that Sam was not feeling well – and that he was suffering so much that he had to be euthanized.

– It is probably a broken leg, but we do not know exactly how the injury occurred, says Ida Näslund at the Myskoxcentrum to SVT.

Sam became nationally known in the fall of 2021 when he decided to stay in the village of Ljusnedal in Härjedalen. The muskox visited plots, paddocks, and dog kennels, among other things – and returned every time it was chased away.

Sam’s remains have been sent to the Norwegian Veterinary Institute for an autopsy.

In Sweden, according to the National Museum of Natural History, there are about ten wild musk oxen, all of which live in Härjedalen.
