Social markets are calling for donations of hygiene products such as sanitary towels, tampons and cups. “Red Box” vouchers also available

Vienna (OTS) – Hygiene products such as sanitary towels, tampons and cups are goods that are rarely found in social markets. Menstrual products do not have a best-before date and are therefore almost never donated to social markets by corporations or supermarkets.

But these hygiene products in particular are expensive – women have to spend thousands of euros on them over the course of their lives. People living on the poverty line are particularly burdened by these expenses.

The social markets of the Samaritan Association of Vienna are therefore calling for donations of sanitary pads, tampons and cups. “Menstrual items can easily be dropped off at the Samaritan Association’s social markets. We pass them on to our customers who are affected by poverty,” says Georg Jelenko, project manager of the social markets of the Samaritan Association of Vienna.

Two thirds of social market customers are single parents and families with large children. For them, period poverty often also means poorer hygienic care.

How can I help?

The donated menstrual items can be dropped off directly at one of the five branches of the Samariterbund social markets, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For larger donations, the Samaritan Association is happy to provide the Samariterwagerl, which can be set up in club premises, authorities or companies.

The city of Vienna has also recently launched the “Red Box” initiative to combat period poverty. Their vouchers for certain hygiene products can also be picked up at the social markets and redeemed at the BIPA branches in Vienna.
