Samdar Barber Tsadik: “Don’t be afraid to compete for positions”

Samdar Barber Tsadik is today the sole CEO in the banking system, and this is not her first year in the position. In the banking system, we have seen great upheavals when it comes to female representation and from days when the five largest banks had 3 CEOs, we are left with one large bank with one CEO.

Samdar Barber Tsadik is in one of the senior positions in the Israeli economy. She is the CEO of the International Bank and has been for 15 years. The International Bank is a different bank in the local landscape, it is a bank that is under the control of a businessman unlike the other banks that do not have a core of control and this is an important figure to understand the complexity of Berber-Tzadik’s role.

More in-

We will continue: the role of a bank CEO is a very complex role by its very nature. He has to manage risks at any given moment, make complex decisions, and at the end of the day the CEO is under the scrutiny of the supervision of the banks, of his board of directors, of investors in the capital market and perhaps most importantly Of course – under the watchful eye of the customer in whose honor this entire operation exists.

A righteous barbarian has another factor she needs to take into account and that is the one in control. It doesn’t matter who is in control, but when you put into this equation a specific factor that needs to be dealt with, it’s not easy. A controlling owner wants to get a return on his investment (but this is reasonable for any investor) but he has friends, family members, partners in other businesses, close associates and just acquaintances and these may put pressure on him which in turn will turn into the CEO of the bank.

There is no claim against the Tzadik businessman, but we are dealing with a figure that is only theoretical and comes to explain another significant component that Smeder Barber-Tzadik must take into account in all of her considerations.

This is not a song of praise for Samdar Berber-Tzadik, but rather that she is an inspiring figure. She has been in the position for 15 years, succeeding in moving the bank (a complex organization like no other) through the first strategic processes. It manages to generate good returns for its shareholders, the International is considered one of the banks that pay good salaries to employees and therefore maintains good working relations within the bank. And between these and these we are talking about a family woman. Husband, children, home and everyday hassles that every parent in Israel goes through and she has been doing it for 15 years.

So without exaggerating the complexity of the situation Barber-Tzadik found herself in, let’s remember that she made her way up the road in the years when it was difficult for women, much more difficult than is customary today, and therefore it is important to understand and enlighten other women what insights she derives from her personal process.

A young girl, a young woman at the beginning of her career, what should she do to take the “right” route?

“I think that the first thing a woman at the beginning of her career should understand is that if she wants to succeed – she can.”

With all due respect to faith, something more is needed.

“Obviously it requires effort and hard work, but it is possible.”

If you were to meet a young woman right now who would ask you this question directly, what would you say to her?

“I would tell her, plan your career. Don’t be afraid to compete for roles that you think are right for the path you’ve chosen. This tip may sound banal, but it’s golden advice. Women need to believe in themselves, develop self-confidence and I know excellent women who do that.

I guess yours, unlike a male CEO, is it easier to find women who are suitable for key positions?

“At the International Bank, we have about 40% women in the senior management, almost 60% of all the managers in the bank are women and about 70% of all the bank’s employees are women. We also have women in positions that are characterized by being staffed by men, such as the manager of the transaction rooms .

“But to your question: it may be, but it is more important to understand that with us, no woman in the bank who has advanced did not advance because she is a woman or even though she is a woman, but because she is successful and this is a key point.”
