Samitivej Hospital, one of Thailand’s leading medical institutions, is taking proactive steps to combat the rising cases of dengue fever in the country. The hospital has organized an event called “Pinning to stop dengue fever… inviting you to get to know the new vaccine” to raise awareness about the disease and educate the public on preventive measures.

According to the Epidemiological Disease Surveillance Report, the current dengue fever outbreak is the worst in five years. The number of patients has tripled compared to last year, with over 90,000 cumulative cases reported. Tragically, 84 people have lost their lives to this disease. In response, Samitivej Hospital has launched a prevention campaign to reduce the impact of the outbreak and ensure that patients receive timely treatment to prevent severe complications.

Dr. Surangkana Techapaitoon, Deputy Group Executive Officer of Samitivej Hospital, emphasized the importance of early care and prevention in combating dengue fever. By detecting the disease before it fully develops, individuals can take necessary precautions and receive appropriate treatment to minimize the risk of severe illness. Prevention has always been a crucial factor in reducing the spread of various diseases, and dengue fever is no exception. It affects both children and adults and often requires hospital treatment due to its potentially life-threatening nature.

Dr. Samantha Limmahakun, an adult infectious diseases physician at Samitivej Hospital, highlighted the increasing rate of dengue fever infection among adults. The spread of the disease is worsening, and those who have had dengue fever previously are at risk of experiencing more severe symptoms when infected again. Dengue fever can be difficult to predict, and there is currently no specific treatment available. Vaccination has proven to be one of the most effective methods of prevention, with an 80.2% efficacy rate in preventing all strains of dengue fever and a 90.4% efficacy rate in preventing hospital admissions.

The dengue fever vaccine is suitable for both children and adults between the ages of 4-60 years. It can be administered to individuals who have and have not previously had dengue fever. The vaccine is considered safe, with common side effects such as pain at the vaccination site, headaches, and muscle pain, which usually subside within a few days.

Dr. Theeraphong Bunyaliphan, a pediatrician at Samitivej Children’s Hospital, stressed the importance of being vigilant if a family member is infected with dengue fever. The Aedes mosquito, known as the vector for dengue fever, can transmit the virus to other family members. Parents and family members should closely monitor symptoms, such as high fever, loss of appetite, and nausea, in children. Seeking professional medical advice is strongly recommended instead of self-medication at home.

To further support prevention efforts, Samitivej Hospital is offering special discounted rates for dengue fever vaccinations. The regular price of two injections is 6,050 baht, but through Lazada, the price is reduced to 4,200 baht, and through the SkinX application, it is reduced to 4,100 baht until December 31, 2023. The hospital is also providing a dengue vaccine service for four strains, priced at 5,000 baht, which includes doctor’s fees and hospital service fees, at Samitivej Sriracha Hospital and Samitivej Chonburi Hospital.

Samitivej Hospital aims to reduce the impact of the dengue fever outbreak by raising awareness, promoting prevention, and providing accessible vaccination services. The hospital hopes that by increasing immunity among the Thai population through vaccination, the number of dengue fever cases will decrease, ultimately leading to a safer and healthier society.]
