Union: “If we gather more than 5,000 union members, we will win”

The National Samsung Electronics Labor Union (NSU), the largest labor union at Samsung Electronics, will go on a three-day general strike from the 8th to the 10th.

At 11 AM today, Jeon Sam-no will hold a general strike resolution rally in front of the main gate of the H1 plant in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province.

The general strike resolution meeting will begin with Vice Chairman Lee Hyeon-guk’s opening declaration, followed by Chairman Son Woo-mok’s presentation of the struggle history, singing of the strike song, disclosure of union membership and general strike participation status, singing of the unity struggle song, on-site remarks, and a march.

In the appeal, Jeon Sam-no stated, “The general strike is a decisive moment to protect the existence and rights of our union.”

He also claimed, “This general strike is the last card we can play,” and “If this strike fails, all negotiation authority will go to the labor-management council, which will result in even greater disadvantages.”

However, some people point out that the timing and other circumstances surrounding this strike are not good.

As of the 6th, the number of union members at Jeon Sam-no reached 29,913, reaching 30,000. It is known that a significant number of union members, accounting for 24% of all employees, are in the semiconductor sector.

The Jeon Sam-no union’s position is that if the company does not show a positive stance in the first general strike, a second additional general strike and even an indefinite general strike may be carried out.

Previously, Samsung Electronics’ labor and management held working-level negotiations and a meeting with DS Division Director (Vice Chairman) Jeon Young-hyun on the 1st, but failed to reach an agreement.

At the 3rd post-arbitration meeting of the Central Labor Relations Commission, the company proposed the following: ▲ Refraining from announcing the results of wage adjustments to non-union members before the final conclusion of wage negotiations between labor and management; ▲ Provision of a one-time payment of 500,000 won in leisure points; ▲ Reducing the number of mandatory vacation days by two days (compensation for unused two days of recharge vacation); and ▲ Efforts for mutual cooperation between labor and management.

The union, on the other hand, demanded separate benefits such as ▲1 day of vacation for all employees ▲wage increases for 855 employees who refused to sign their 2024 annual salaries, but when this was not met, they declared a general strike with no work and no pay.
