Professional baseball Samsung Lions infielder Lee Chang-yong and pitcher Kim Sung-kyung returned after completing the 55-day Major League Baseball (MLB) draft league.
The Samsung team announced on the 7th, “Lee Chang-yong and Kim Sung-kyung completed the MLB draft league and returned to Korea via Incheon Airport on the 7th.”
Lee Chang-yong and Kim Sung-kyung left for the United States with their training coach on July 15 to participate in the MLB draft league.
The MLB Draft League is a league that was created by MLB in 2021 to analyze and discover promising players. This is the fourth year, and six teams will participate, playing 80 games per team.
MLB uses equipment such as TrackMan and Rapsodo to measure player data and shares the analysis data with players and each MLB team’s scouting team.
The draft league has produced a total of 133 MLB draft picks over the past three years.
Lee Chang-yong played in 38 games, recording a batting average of 0.280 (40 hits in 143 at-bats), 8 home runs, and 38 RBIs, ranking first on the team in home runs and RBIs.
Kim Sung-kyung, who pitched 11⅓ innings in 11 games, struck out 13 batters, walked 11 batters, and gave up 9 runs, but learned a variety of breaking balls.
Lee Chang-yong said, “American players have solid defensive fundamentals, so that’s what I wanted to learn the most. As the games went on, my defensive skills improved and I gained confidence,” and “I also learned a lot by actively approaching my teammates and coaches. I will repay them with good results in Korea for giving me such a great opportunity.”
Kim Sung-kyung said, “I wondered if I would have a chance to play baseball in the United States, but I had a good experience thanks to the support of the team,” and “Learning various pitches and grips locally was very helpful. My record wasn’t good, but I will show a better side of myself in Korea through this experience.”
