Fayetteville, Georgia—Moviegoers in the Atlanta metropolitan area are about to experience cinema in a new light, thanks to a partnership between the Georgia Theatre Company and Samsung Electronics America. Trilith Cinemas, the Georgia Theatre Company’s newest location in Fayetteville, is the first U.S. Theater to premiere the latest generation of Samsung Onyx cinema LED screens, promising a more immersive and visually stunning experience for film enthusiasts. The move signals a growing trend toward premium cinema experiences as theaters compete with the convenience of streaming services.
The installation of the Samsung Onyx screens represents a significant investment in the future of moviegoing, according to both companies. Five auditoriums within Trilith Cinemas will feature the technology, with screen sizes ranging from 5 meters (16 feet) to a massive 14 meters (46 feet) designed for large-scale presentations. This commitment to cutting-edge display technology aims to recapture the magic of the big screen and offer something audiences can’t easily replicate at home.
A New Standard in Picture Quality
Unlike traditional projection-based systems, the Samsung Onyx utilizes self-emissive LED technology. So images are generated directly from the screen, resulting in true blacks, infinite contrast ratios, and vibrant colors. According to Samsung, this technology delivers unparalleled picture quality, ensuring every frame is presented with exceptional depth and clarity. The screens also support High Dynamic Range (HDR) picture technology and frame rates of up to 4K 96Hz, further enhancing the visual experience. This is a key differentiator as consumers increasingly demand higher fidelity in their entertainment.
Jonathan del Rosario, head of product, display solutions at Samsung Electronics America, emphasized the collaborative nature of the project. “Guests at GTC Trilith Cinemas are among the first in the United States to experience the latest Samsung Onyx cinema LED technology, where every frame is presented with exceptional depth and clarity,” he said in a press release. “Together with Georgia Theatre Company, we are helping audiences experience the magic of movies in a way that reflects the filmmakers’ creative vision.”
Trilith Cinemas: More Than Just a Movie Theater
The opening of Trilith Cinemas isn’t just about new screens; it’s about creating a destination. Located within the Trilith Live community—a rapidly growing film and television production hub south of Atlanta—the theater aims to cater to both local residents and industry professionals. The theater also features multiple full-service bars, offering patrons a place to socialize before or after screenings. A GTX Premium Large Format auditorium provides an even more immersive experience with enhanced sound and seating.
Bo Chambliss, president of Georgia Theatre Company, highlighted the strategic location and the broader vision for the theater. “Located at the center of one of the most important production communities in the country, GTC Trilith Cinemas at Trilith Live is a natural home for this next generation of cinema,” Chambliss stated. “Bringing the latest Samsung Onyx cinema LED technology to GTC Trilith Cinemas allows us to present films with remarkable image performance and scale while honoring the filmmaker’s intent.”
The Rise of Premium Cinema Experiences
The investment in Samsung Onyx technology at Trilith Cinemas reflects a broader trend in the movie theater industry. Faced with competition from streaming services and changing consumer habits, theaters are increasingly focusing on offering premium experiences that can’t be easily replicated at home. This includes luxury seating, enhanced food and beverage options, and, as seen with Trilith Cinemas, cutting-edge display technology. The goal is to transform moviegoing from a simple activity into a special event. The success of this strategy will likely depend on whether theaters can convince audiences that the enhanced experience is worth the price of admission.
The Georgia Theatre Company’s commitment to innovation extends beyond the screens themselves. The theater is equipped with GDC’s DCI-certified SR-5520 HDR and HFR media server, ensuring compatibility with the latest cinematic standards. This combination of hardware and software is designed to deliver a seamless and high-quality viewing experience for every film.
Trilith Cinemas officially opened in December 2025, according to the Georgia Theatre Company website. The theater is currently showing a variety of new releases and classic films, offering patrons a chance to experience the Samsung Onyx technology firsthand. The Georgia Theatre Company has not yet announced any further plans for expanding the Samsung Onyx installation to other locations, but the success of the Trilith Cinemas could pave the way for future deployments.
As the entertainment landscape continues to evolve, the partnership between Georgia Theatre Company and Samsung Electronics America demonstrates a proactive approach to meeting the demands of modern moviegoers. The focus on immersive experiences and cutting-edge technology suggests a commitment to ensuring the long-term viability of the cinema industry.
