Samsung presents its new mid-range phones Galaxy A35 and A55. The devices benefit above all from their good price-performance ratio.

Specifically, this is about the Galaxy A35 and A55 models. These are primarily aimed at users who have slightly higher demands on their smartphone but don’t want to spend 1,000 euros on a new device. And these are a few: Samsung’s mid-range cell phones – the current models are A34 and A54 – are very popular and are among the best-selling cell phones.

The first impression is impressive

Let’s start with the design: At first glance, the housing and display have hardly changed compared to their respective predecessors. If you take a closer look, users will notice small but subtle differences that should not be underestimated.

The “smaller” model A35 now has a glass back for the first time – in contrast to the plastic wall of its direct predecessor A34. The A55 also has a metal frame. As a small special feature, all four colors offer a special lighting effect – depending on the incidence of light. As expected, both models are also water and dust resistant thanks to IP67 certification

Dimensions, display and front camera

The dimensions of the devices are almost the same; both have a screen diagonal of 6.6 inches (16.83 cm). If you want to know more precisely: The external dimensions of the A35 are 161.7 x 78.0 x 8.2 millimeters with a weight of 209 grams, while the A55 is 161.1 x 77.4 x 8.2 and 213 grams. Both smartphones use an FHD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hertz and a brightness of up to 1,000 nits.

This is the first detail that has been selectively improved. In contrast to its predecessor, the front camera is no longer cut out in the “smaller” model A35, but is integrated into the display through a so-called punchhole, as in the A55. And speaking of the front camera: the A35 has a resolution of 13 megapixels (MP), while the A55 has a resolution of 32 MP.

Main camera with 50 megapixels and Super HDR video

The three lenses of the main camera on the back of the smartphones are arranged in the same way on both devices; there is no visual difference to the previous models. The pure values are also almost unchanged. The main sensors of the A35 and A55 have a 50 MP resolution, plus a 5 MP macro lens and an 8 MP ultra wide-angle lens on the A35; on the A55 this has a resolution of 12 MP.

In practice, the images from both models – despite having almost the same values - should appear significantly brighter and more lively, especially when taking photos at night. This is made possible by the so-called multi-readout function, which reads each pixel four times. Samsung calls this “Advanced Nightography”.

Another highlight of the cameras is the ability to record Super HDR videos with the devices. According to Samsung, these offer more details and sharpness by displaying more than 68 million colors in all lighting scenarios. The revised stabilizer should also help ensure that video recordings are less blurry in the future.

Galaxy A55 gets some special features

If you are not satisfied with the results of the camera, at least with the Galaxy A55 you have the opportunity to rework your photos using artificial intelligence (AI). The AI is supposed to filter out noise using so-called multi-frame synthesis processing and produce clear results even in poor lighting conditions.

The “Dual Recording” function offers A55 users the opportunity to see both the main and front camera recordings on the display when making videos. Depending on the setting, these are then displayed via a split screen or as a picture-in-picture. The “Image Clipper” function is also only available on the “larger” model. This allows users to copy motifs from one image and paste them into another image.

Samsung relies on Exynos processors

When it comes to releasing new smartphone models, Samsung’s choice of processors has recently caused a lot of discussion. Critics have complained that only the Galaxy S24 Ultra was equipped with a Snapdragon chip, whereas users of the S24 and S24+ models had to make do with an Exynos processor.

Samsung is also relying entirely on in-house production for the new A35 and A55 models: The Galaxy A35 gets the Exynos 1380 processor, which was installed in the more expensive A54 model last year. The A55, on the other hand, is equipped with the successor Exynos 1480. According to Samsung, this should offer up to 15 percent more computing power and up to 32 percent more graphics power than last year’s model.
