Samsung Releases October 2023 Security Update for Galaxy S20 FE

Samsung has been busy this week, rolling out the October 2023 security update to numerous Galaxy devices. Now, the update has finally reached the original Galaxy S Fan Edition, the Galaxy S20 FE.

The LTE version of the Galaxy S20 FE, powered by the Exynos 990 chipset, is receiving the update in nearly a dozen countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, Mexico, and Switzerland. The update comes with firmware version ending in HWI7 and focuses solely on bringing new security fixes.

The October 2023 security patch for Samsung devices aims to fix two critical vulnerabilities found in the core Android OS, along with 12 vulnerabilities specific to Galaxy smartphones and tablets.

These vulnerabilities pose significant risks, allowing attackers to gain access to different parts of the software without the user’s consent. They can potentially run harmful code, enable or disable Wi-Fi networks, and even install different versions of apps. To prevent exploitation of certain vulnerabilities, some details have been left undisclosed until the October patch reaches all eligible devices.

For Galaxy S20 FE owners, it’s worth checking if the update is available for their country through the firmware archive. Alternatively, they can try to download it directly from the phone’s Settings » Software update menu. Another option is to download the full-sized firmware from the archive and install it on the phone using a Windows PC.

As of October 12, only the LTE variant of the Galaxy S20 FE is receiving the October security patch. However, it is expected that the Snapdragon-powered 5G model will join the LTE variant soon. It’s important to note that neither variant will be receiving Android 14 and One UI 6.0 updates. The Galaxy S20 FE, like its predecessors, launched with Android 10 and has been eligible for three major OS upgrades.

Samsung continues to prioritize the security of its devices, ensuring that users have the latest protection against potential threats. By regularly releasing security updates like this, they demonstrate their commitment to keeping their users’ information and devices safe.
