One for the tech-savvy general public, the other for connected executives. Samsung showed off the new Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 folding smartphones at its annual Unpacked event on Wednesday. devices available in two models: a clamshell smartphone and another smartphone convertible into a mini-tablet.
The most affordable – from 1109 euros in 128 GB of memory – the Galaxy Z Flip 4 benefits from a hardware update and some improvements made possible by feedback from Flip 3 users. The hinge has been modified in order to increase the resistance of the device which offers a beautiful 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. Outside, the 1.9-inch mini-screen has gained in readability.
A latest generation processor, the Snapdragon 8 + Gen 1, and 8 GB of RAM drive this model equipped with a camera with two modules: a 12 Megapixel (MP) wide-angle and a 12 MP ultra wide-angle. Autonomy has been improved by a 3700 mAh battery and a less power-hungry processor. It charges at 25 W. It’s also the only fully water-resistant folding screen smartphone with its IPX 8 certification. You could let it take a 30-minute bath in 1.5 m of water.
A true pocket tablet, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 follows in the footsteps of its predecessor with a few additions and corrections. In particular, it adopts a larger AMOLED exterior screen than its predecessor with 6.2 inches. Slipped under the 7.6-inch internal panel, the 4 MP selfie camera is even more discreet to take full advantage of a screen whose adaptive refresh rate oscillates up to 120 Hz. The rendering is objectively successful.
The technical sheet takes up the criteria of the Flip such as the Snapdragon 8 + Gen 1 or the 4400 mAh battery but plays the power card with 12 GB of RAM. The rear camera takes up the strengths of the S22s released in the spring and their three sensors: a main 50 megapixel multitasking camera, an ultra-wide-angle camera (12 MP) and a 10 MP telephoto lens with an X3 optical zoom.
The central fold also gains in discretion while the 263 g device seems more robust. Samsung highlights laboratory tests from Veritas which guarantee 200,000 folds. What convince the barge to switch to folding? Samsung plans to sell twice as many of this type of smartphone this year and should quickly cut prices on previous generations.
