After two rather poor years, Samsung wants to grow again properly in 2022. The world market share is to be increased by almost three percent. Sounds like little – but with an expected 1.5 billion devices sold worldwide, that’s around 45 million galaxies that Samsung also wants to sell.
More Galaxy for less money
The first step in this ambitious plan is called “Galaxy S21 Fan Edition (FE)”. For years, Samsung has been selling a cheaper, slightly improved version of the current Galaxy S generation under the name suffix FE.
So this year too: The FE has a more restrained design, a slightly larger display (6.4 instead of 6.2 inches) and a more powerful battery (4500 instead of 4000 mAh) than the Galaxy S21.
Despite the better technology, the price is lower. The S21 costs 849 euros with 128 gigabytes of storage. Samsung is offering the fan edition at 100 euros cheaper, i.e. for 749 euros. A version with 256 gigabytes of memory costs 819 euros.

Price comparison
So if you wanted to buy a Galaxy S21 up to now, you should now definitely go for the fan edition. The comparison with the models from other providers is less flattering.
Xiaomi, for example, sells a comparable smartphone with the 11T for as little as 499 euros. It has a somewhat slower processor, but it has a larger display and a stronger battery. OnePlus is offering its Model 9 for 699 euros. It has a larger display, a stronger battery (including a faster charging system) and a better camera (but without telephoto zoom).
The bottom line is that Samsung is primarily competing with the Galaxy S21’s fan edition. Galaxy buyers get more cell phones for less money here. But compared to the main competitors, even the fan edition is still too expensive. The new cell phone is exactly what the name affix says: a bonus for fans. Samsung will not be able to inspire smart price foxes with this device.
