Samsung plans to add a car crash detection feature to high-end Galaxy phones, according to what was observed in the operating system in the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 5 phones.

There are references in the system to a sensor called “car crash detection alert,” which is actually a composite of virtual sensors that process and integrate data from some of the underlying physical sensors.

According to Android researcher Michel Rahman, the sensor is designed to instantly report potential car accidents directly to the applications associated with it.

It is expected that the new feature will be available in some of the company’s high-end phones, including the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Flip 5, and others, and it may be available with the upcoming One UI 7.0 update later this year.

The car accident detection feature has been available in Google Pixel phones since 2019, and it is also available in iPhone 14 phones and later.

The car accident detection system works by relying on acceleration sensors, gyroscope, and microphone to obtain sound and motion data from smartphones. This data is then analyzed to determine whether the vehicle has been involved in an accident or not.

When an accident is detected, the phone displays an option to call the emergency number, and in the event of no response, the phone automatically contacts emergency services and sends the current geographical location. This feature contributes to the speed of emergency and ambulance services’ response, saving users’ lives.

It is expected that Samsung will rely on the same mechanism for the accident detection feature that it is developing.
