Four years have passed since Hamburg native Samy Deluxe released his last record. But now he has a “great album in the can” with “Hochkultur 2”, as he says himself. But the way there was rocky.

Berlin.

Actually, the album “Hochkultur 2” by Samy Deluxe was supposed to be released in early 2020. Now the new record of the German hip-hop artist will be released on August 11th – four years after his last album “Hochkultur” (2019). “Hip-hop was my gateway drug,” he raps on the song “MikroDose.” And anyone who knows the now 45-year-old Samy Deluxe knows that he started rapping lyrics at the age of 13 and was enthusiastic about hip-hop culture. He had his breakthrough in 2001 with “Weck mich auf” – well-known songs like “Schwarzweiß” or “Sneak Preview” belong to the song portfolio of the native of Hamburg.

With “Hochkultur 2”, 18 new songs have been created over the years, ranging from slow rap songs, fast, pop beats and music to chill out. “I really wanted to tell a lot on this album,” said Samy Sorge’s real name in a YouTube interview he uploaded in mid-July. “Hochkultur 2” is “very personal” for him.

Just in time for the 50th hip hop birthday

Similar to “Hochkultur”, the new tracks give an insight into the life of Deluxe, who also works as a street artist on the side, as can be seen in the song “Last Exit” (“Mal’ Graffiti auf Trendmauern” ). The album is also about everyday things – for example the song “Vendetta” (“So focused on the problem that you often see past the solution”) or “Cold Feet” (“I have my taste in the pandemic lost in show business”).

The fact that “Hochkultur 2” actually came about over the long period of music production of several years – listening to, exchanging, remixing and producing what feels like 1000 songs – is what Deluxe says in a YouTube interview: “In the meantime I didn’t even know if it would ever will be done, if I ever want to make an album again, if I ever want to go on stage again.” And he admits: “I couldn’t listen to my songs for a while.” For half a year he didn’t even make any music – and then produced several songs in one month. But now he has “a great album in the box”. And after his last album “Hochkultur” he is not alone with this assessment.

Incidentally, Deluxe deliberately chose August 11 for the release. This is “exactly the 50th anniversary of hip-hop”, according to the artist, who has been active in the music business for many years. “50 years of hip-hop, I’m 45, that’s my whole life and even more.”
