Wembanyama disclosed that the security detail accompanying him promptly pushed Spears away, but he was unaware of her identity until much later.
According to TMZ, Spears filed a police report asserting that she was struck by a security guard while attempting to get Wembanyama’s attention. The incident reportedly took place near a restaurant at the ARIA hotel and casino on Wednesday night.
TMZ reported that Spears, accompanied by a group of four, encountered a swarm of fans as they entered the casino. It is claimed that she tapped Wembanyama on the shoulder in an attempt to grab his attention, but ultimately suffered a blow to the face and lost her glasses in the process.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to a “battery investigation” at the mentioned address, refraining from disclosing specific names or further details at this time. So far, no arrests or citations have been issued.
While representatives for Britney Spears declined to comment, Wembanyama recalled being advised by security personnel not to stop for anyone en route to the restaurant for fear of inciting a crowd.
Speaking about the incident, Wembanyama said, “Something did happen when I was walking with some security from the team. There was one person who was calling me but we talked before with security. I couldn’t stop. That person grabbed me from behind, and I just know the security pushed her away. I didn’t stop to look so I could walk in and enjoy a nice dinner.”
Wembanyama only discovered that the incident had become headline news hours later. “At first, I was like, ‘You’re joking,’ but yeah, it turns out it was Britney Spears. I never saw her face. I just kept walking straight,” he added.
Despite the incident, Wembanyama remains focused on his professional obligations. He is set to make his NBA Summer League debut with the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night against the Charlotte Hornets. On Wednesday night, he graciously signed autographs for fans at the ARIA, and he continued the same gesture for a small group of bystanders at a local high school during practice with the team on Thursday morning.
The incident involving Wembanyama and Britney Spears has caused a stir, capturing significant attention both nationally and internationally. Authorities are expected to continue their investigation while the respective parties involved have yet to provide further comments.
