The Sharks signed coach Ryan Warsofsky to a multi-year contract extension, locking down the team’s leadership as preparations begin for the upcoming campaign. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed by the organization, adhering to team policy, but the extension arrives as Warsofsky enters the final year of his original contract.
Hired on June 13, 2024, following a two-year stint as an assistant coach in San Jose, the 37-year-old bench boss stands as the 11th full-time coach in franchise history. General manager Mike Grier emphasized that getting ahead of the contract status before the regular season gives Warsofsky valuable stability.
Grier pointed to Warsofsky’s four-year tenure with the organization, which included two seasons as an assistant, as definitive proof of his capabilities. The timing just worked out that we wanted to get ahead of it before the season started,
Grier said.
Building a Culture of Development and On-Ice Turnaround
The multi-year extension rewards a developmental approach that transformed San Jose from the league’s basement into a legitimate postseason contender. After finishing last in the overall standings for two straight years, the Sharks authored a dramatic turnaround during the 2025-26 campaign.
Under Warsofsky’s direction, the team achieved a year-over-year improvement of plus-19 wins, nearly doubling their victory total from the 2024-25 season while driving up their overall points by 34. That surge kept the squad in the playoff hunt for 80 of the 82 regular-season games, ultimately falling just four points short of a postseason berth.
That player development yielded immediate dividends. San Jose led the entire NHL in scoring from players aged 22 and younger last season, posting 192 such points—the second-most in club history behind only the 2006-07 squad’s 197 points. Macklin Celebrini, the first-overall selection in 2025, broke multiple franchise rookie records and earned a spot as a Calder Trophy finalist. Will Smith overcame a slow start to finish in the top five among rookies across nearly every offensive category, while William Eklund, Collin Graf, and Shakir Mukhamadullin all registered significant statistical growth.
Coaching Philosophy and Career Milestones
Despite the security of a multi-year extension, Warsofsky approaches the business of hockey with the perspective of someone who grinded through the minor professional ranks. Before reaching the NHL, he spent three consecutive years on one-year contracts in the East Coast League.
Reflecting on the unpredictable nature of coaching tenures across the league, Warsofsky noted that his internal drive remains constant regardless of contract length. That’s the business that we’re in,
he observed. I was just going to stick to what I believe in and what I believe in as a coach, and let it all kind of play out.
His résumé reflects success across multiple professional tiers. Warsofsky captured an IIHF World Championship Gold Medal as head coach of Team USA in 2025 and secured Calder Cup titles in the American Hockey League as both a head coach with the Chicago Wolves in 2021-22 and an assistant with the Charlotte Checkers in 2018-19. Across his AHL career, he compiled a regular-season record of 105-47-11-7, good for a .671 points percentage.
The extension caps off a busy offseason of roster retention for San Jose, which also secured long-term commitments from Celebrini and Graf in recent weeks.
