/ Videos and photos showed beachgoers in Florida using their hands to dig sand in an attempt to rescue a little girl who was trapped in a hole before she died.

According to the details reported by the New York Post, the 5-year-old girl had dug a 150-centimeter-deep hole on Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Beach at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, when heavy sand collapsed on her and buried her.

Pictures showed beachgoers and rescuers digging through the sand in an attempt to rescue the little girl.

Later, rescue teams joined the digging operation, using shovels to remove the sand.

A spokeswoman for the beach administration said, “The little girl had died of suffocation by the time rescuers reached her,” stressing that “the paramedics tried to revive her, but to no avail.”

Eyewitnesses said that “the time the girl spent buried under the sand is still unclear.”

Officials warned against “sand digging on beaches, which led to the deaths of more than 31 people between 1997 and 2007, whose ages ranged between 3 and 21 years.”
