Green MP Sandrine Rousseau denounced Sunday the lack of mobilization of the State to support and protect threatened elected officials, and shared her personal experience of cyberbullying, intimidation letters and insults in the public space. The debate on the safety of elected officials was revived by the mayor of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, Yannick Morez (DVD), who resigned after being targeted by arson and threats from the far right. The elected official deplored the “lack of support” from the state.

Asked about BFM TV, Sandrine Rousseau judged “ridiculous” the government’s proposal to create a “center for the analysis and fight against attacks on elected officials”. “We need a mobilization of the State which protects its elected officials”, estimated the deputy, who often arouses debates and controversies by her clear positions on ecology and the defense of women’s rights.

“It’s everyday”

“All means are used and obviously I have absolutely direct threats,” she said, recalling having obtained three convictions for death threats and rape. “It’s daily,” added the elected Europe Ecologie les Verts (EELV). Sandrine Rousseau declared having sent a file to the office of the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin, and having obtained only an end of inadmissibility.

Without going as far as police protection, the MP believes that elected officials should be able to benefit from support and advice. “I am one of those threatened, the question is why I do not have an appointment with someone from the security of elected officials, someone from the security of people in sight, with someone from intelligence , with a person who is in charge of threat issues, explaining to me where to be careful or not, how I should behave in the public space,” she explained.

“I don’t feel safe”

“We do not know, for example, if we should continue to take public transport or if we cannot continue to take the metro”, continued the deputy for Paris. “I take the metro a lot, but when it’s tense, I take more taxis, because there are times when I don’t feel safe in the public space,” she added. Sandrine Rousseau clarified that she had not considered resigning. “I never said to myself that I had to stop, because I have a shell”.
