Moldova is interested in pragmatic and constructive cooperation with Russia, said President Maia Sandu. She called the negotiations with Gazprom “very difficult”, and the conditions initially proposed were unaffordable for Chisinau.

“The gas contract concerns our relations with the Russian Federation. Obviously, there are problems – more serious and simpler ones. We have always been sincere and said that we are interested in pragmatic and constructive cooperation based on mutual respect, ”said Ms Sandu on the air of Moldova-1 (quoted by TASS).

The President noted that Russia made concessions on gas and the country will not buy it at market prices. Among other problems in relations, she named the export of Moldovan agricultural products, the Transnistrian issue and agreements on social guarantees for Moldovan citizens working in Russia.

Maia Sandu said that high-level meetings with Russia are not planned yet. On November 17, a meeting is to be held between Moldovan Foreign Minister Nikolai Popescu and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Preparations are also underway for a meeting of the intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation.

Gazprom and Moldovagaz signed a new five-year gas supply contract at the end of November after several rounds of negotiations. The parties agreed to audit the debt.

About the position of Maia Sandu on relations with Russia – in her interview to Kommersant “This is a positive precedent in our relations with the Russian Federation.”
