Sanremo, Francesca Fagnani’s monologue on juvenile prisons (and the controversy with Gratteri) – Corriere TV

by time news

The co-host on the Ariston stage: “There are words that have to tear down gates and walls to get to the Sanremo stage”

(LaPresse) “Not all words are the same and not all of them reach us easily. There are words that have to tear down gates and walls to get to the Sanremo stage, like these that come from the Nisida juvenile prison, from kids who don’t seek our pain, because they wouldn’t know what to do with it”.

Thus begins the monologue of the co-host Francesca Fagnani, who tells the stories of young people who have made mistakes but who want to redeem themselves.

Fagnani underlines, speaking of the young prisoners: “Your future is not irreversible. If when you leave here you respect the law, you overcome prejudices. But if you don’t make it and you go back to prison, the real one, the adult one, then yes, it’s really over. Because in Italy, with a few exceptions, prison serves only to punish the offender, not to re-educate, much less to reintegrate into society. An authoritative magistrate, who coordinates important investigations (Nicola Gratteri, ed), this summer on a public occasion he said ‘I am against a slap in prison or barracks, the prisoner must not even be touched with a finger’. Do you know why? He shouldn’t be seen as a victim. But that’s not the case, he shouldn’t be beaten because the state cannot apply the laws of oppression and violence used by the people he arrests. If we don’t make sure that those who leave prison are changed, we will all have lost.”
