Santiago Giménez Shines Again: Scores Twice and Assists in Feyenoord’s Supercup Victory Over PSV

by time news

The Mexican Santiago Giménez had an extraordinary performance by scoring two goals and providing an assist for Feyenoord to claim the Dutch Supercup after defeating PSV of his compatriot Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano in penalties 4-2 after a 4-4 draw in regular time.

A thrilling match with ups and downs at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven where ‘Chucky’ Lozano remained on the bench and Santi Giménez played for 69 minutes.

Noa Lang put the team of Peter Bosz ahead in the 9th minute, while Bebote equalized for Feyenoord under Brian Priske, who made his official debut after replacing Arne Slot, now the successor of Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Giménez took advantage of a foul on his teammate Gjivai Zechiël to equalize at 1-1 in the 29th minute, and four minutes later, he made a spectacular play starting from midfield at full speed to get past two defenders and deliver a wonderful diagonal that Bart Nieuwkoop converted to complete the comeback.

Luuk de Jong made it 2-2 for PSV in the 48th minute, but the Mexican once again appeared, being brought down inside the box by the goalkeeper, allowing him to score from the penalty spot, making it 2-3 for Feyenoord in the 54th minute.

Feyenoord’s joy was short-lived, as Guus Til equalized the game for PSV in the 65th minute, but Antoni Milambo restored the lead seven minutes later.

It seemed the match would finish this way in regular time, but a third penalty was awarded to PSV, which De Jong converted in the 80th minute to extend the final to penalties.

Johan Bakayoko and Guus Til missed their penalties for PSV, while Feyenoord converted all four of their attempts to lift the trophy on the opponent’s field.

This is Feyenoord’s fifth Dutch Supercup title after 1991, 1999, 2017, and 2018. PSV, which came in as the three-time champion, remains the most successful club with 14 trophies.

Meanwhile, this is the third title Santiago Giménez has won in Europe after the Eredivisie in the 2022-23 season and the Dutch Cup he lifted last April.
