How exciting! The Guatemalan boy Santiago Martinez came in second place in the competition called World Olympiad of Young Mathematicians (WYMO) and it is a great pride for our country.

After passing a series of tests and excelling in several of them, the little boy not only fulfilled his dream of participating, but also won a medal. Here we will tell you more about his performance during the competition!

Santiago Martinez won the silver medal

The international round was held in Bali, Indonesia, and with a total of 25 questions, which were divided into 20 multiple choice and 5 justification questions, Santiago Martinez completed the math tests on August 9 and subsequently awaited review and final results.

The big news was shared on August 10th, Javier MartinezSantiago’s father, announced through a post on the social network X, that his son won the silver medal at the 2024 Mathematical Olympiad. How exciting!

The Guatemalan boy traveled with his mother Luisa Velasquezleaving Guatemala on August 5th for Mexico and then Bali, arriving at its destination on August 7th at 7:00 p.m. A total of 48 hours of flight and ready to face the competition.

After obtaining the silver medal, Guatemala.com managed to communicate with Santiago Martinez and indicated: The competition was good, with events that were appropriate for the different categories and ages. When I won the medal I felt very happy, impressed and amazed.

A passion for numbers

Santiago Martinez He is 13 years old and currently studies at the Benito Juárez Rotary Educational Center in Guatemala City. He is a child who likes to be busy most of the time and that is why he enrolled in an academy that would prepare him in mathematics outside of the school.

With his passion for numbers, he managed to stand out at the Cermat academy in Nuevo León, Mexico, and has already participated in several competitions. This was the first one in which he managed to qualify for the second round and where he emerged victorious. How cool!

What is the competition about?

The World Olympiad of Young Mathematicians 2024 (WYMO) is a competition International mathematics organized by the STEM Olympiad Organizing Center (OCSO).

This non-profit organization is dedicated to the development of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education around the world, seeking to foster talent and passion for mathematics in young students.

WYMO attracts children and young people aged 9 to 18 from around the world, who are divided into three categories based on their school grade: A (4th to 6th grade), B (7th to 9th grade) and C (10th to 12th grade). Each category tests different areas of mathematical knowledge, including algebra, quadratic functions, inequalities, calculus, logarithms, numerical series and number theory.
