Santiago Peña wins the presidential elections in Paraguay

The Colorado Party candidate, Santiago Peña, won the presidential elections in Paraguay, according to figures from the Preliminary Electoral Results Transmission system (TREP), ratified by the Superior Court of Electoral Justice (TSJE).

Citizen participation was over 63%. Peña 42.74% of the preferences, followed by the candidate for the National Concertation for a New Paraguay party, Efraín Alegre, with 27.48%.

In third place is the representative of the National Crusade Party, Payo Cubas, with 22.92%, while the other presidential candidates have less than 2%.

In Paraguay there is no second round, so the candidate with the most votes wins, and according to the schedule, the president-elect will assume office on August 15, 2023, and will leave office in August 2028, with no possibility of re-election.

The electoral process of this April 30 is the eighth since the coup that ended the dictatorship of more than 35 years of Alfredo Stroessner in February 1989.
