In 1894, he was named Titular Bishop of Pinara and Apostolic Vicar of Casanare. As a bishop, he stood out for his apostolic care and fidelity to the Church. He created the work program called “God and Colombia”, without stopping his missionary work. He visited remote or difficult-to-reach areas. His motto was: “A single soul is worth more than my whole life.”
In 1896, he was named bishop of Pasto. His forceful preaching and his simplicity provoked the ridicule of his enemies, including some bishops, who attacked him through the local press. Despite everything, Saint Ezekiel treated his aggressors with mercy, and always included them in his prayers.
Back home
In 1905, he was diagnosed with cancer and, at the repeated pleas of his brothers and the people who loved him, he decided to embark for Spain to undergo surgery. Unfortunately, the intervention was very painful and was not successful. The good Ezequiel used to repeat in that stage of illness: “My God, give me courage to suffer for you.”
