The City of São Paulo signed this Monday (7) an agreement with an international entity to create strategies to house and reduce the homeless population group in the city of São Paulo.
The contract with the Institute of Global Homelessness offers regular meetings with mayors from eight cities—London and Manchester (England), Helsinki (Finland), London, Medicine Hat and Edmonton (Canada), Arica (Chile), and Houston (USA). ).
The idea is to implement the “housing first” concept, already in practice in these places, through the municipal shelter program called Vila Reencontro. The term refers to the reception strategy that prioritizes access to housing for vulnerable people.
In force since July of last year, the Reunion program brings together villages made up of 18-square-meter houses that house homeless people. The project was inaugurated by the management of Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) as an initiative within the precepts of “housing first”, despite the fact that residents have controlled access and food supply, which does not characterize the autonomy provided for in the foreign concept.
