The Mayan singer-songwriter Sara Curruchich will present at WOMEXa global music exhibition that brings together more than two thousand professionals from more than 90 countries around the world every year. WOMEX, the World Music Exhibitionis an international meeting that brings together artists and professionals from diverse cultures and regions of the planet, offering a space for musical exhibition and exchange. This event ―held annually since 1994― is known for being one of the main meeting points for the global music scene, attracting more than two thousand professionals from more than 90 countries.
The 2024 festival will take place in Manchester, UK, from October 23-27. During these days, conferences, trade fairs, film screenings and a series of concerts will take place in various venues around the city. Sara Curruchich ―who is the only Guatemalan and Central American artist selected for this year’s edition― will bring her music to a top-level international stage. What an honor!
The artist excitedly shared the news on her social media, where she expressed her excitement and gratitude. She wrote on her social media: “When I started singing, I had read about WOMEX, this space for musical encounters, and I had dreamed so much of being part of it. Now it will be a reality, we’re going to Manchester! Yojeb’ixan chiri’! I’m going to sing in Kaqchikel there.”

Sara Curruchich, originally from San Juan Comalapa, Chimaltenango, is a prominent figure in Guatemalan and Latin American music, recognized for her commitment to the preservation and dissemination of the Kaqchikel Mayan culture. Her music is characterized by combining rock, folk, and traditional Kaqchikel Mayan music with lyrics that address themes such as history, memory, culture, and the struggles of indigenous peoples.
Since she began her musical career she has become the first indigenous singer-songwriter from Guatemala in bringing his music – sung in Kaqchikel and Spanish – to international stages. He has toured countries such as Mexico, France, Chile, Canada, and the United States, where he recently performed at the Lincoln Center in New York, one of the most prestigious venues in the world.
This has been a year of great success for the Guatemalan singer-songwriter. In January, she embarked on a tour of Mexico, the United States, and Europe, where several of her concerts sold out. In addition, she was awarded the Order of Arts and Letters of the Republic of France and was recognized with the Rising Tide Award Recipient at the 2024 International Folk Music Awards.
