Christian Democrats’ EU Parliamentarian Sara Skyttedal Reverses Decision, Returns as Candidate for EU Elections

After withdrawing her candidacy for next year’s EU elections, Sara Skyttedal of the Christian Democrats has announced that she has changed her mind and is once again available. In a Facebook post, she expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming response she received after her initial withdrawal.

Skyttedal stated, “I was not prepared for the broad support, but I feel grateful for all the encouragement and support I received from both voters and party representatives in this situation.” In an interview with P4 Extra, she added, “If you get that kind of invitation, it’s clear that you feel a great deal of humility in the face of that support, but it’s also an obligation, because after all, it’s the representatives who decide.”

She also revealed that she learned it was very close in the nomination committee, with only one vote separating her from securing a spot on the list. Originally, she had declined the second place on the nomination committee’s list, according to the committee’s chairman, Ingemar Kihlström.

Meanwhile, MEP David Lega tops the nomination committee’s list, with regional politician Martin Hallander in the second position. Skyttedal was initially the second name on the list before her withdrawal.

“We are dissatisfied with the outcome, we wanted to see Sara Skyttedal as number one, not David Lega,” expressed Stefan Sarmes, chairman of KDU. However, he also acknowledged the qualifications of Martin Hallander, who is proposed as the runner-up and is regarded as skilled and knowledgeable in EU matters.

The final decision on the ballot paper will be determined by the party council on Friday, October 13. The Christian Democrats’ trial election, on which the nomination committee’s proposal is based, was conducted at the end of May.

Updated News: The Altinget is currently seeking Sara Skyttedal for further comments on her decision.
