National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom Killed in Washington D.C. Shooting; Political Fallout Ensues

A tragic shooting in Washington D.C. has claimed the life of 20-year-old Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a member of the West Virginia National Guard, and left another service member critically injured, sparking both grief and political controversy. Beckstrom’s father, Gary Beckstrom, shared the devastating news on Facebook Thursday, stating, “My baby girl has passed to glory. If I don’t talk to you don’t be offended, this has been a horrible tragedy.”

A Targeted Attack on National Guard Troops

The shooting occurred on Wednesday, and has been described by law enforcement as a targeted attack. Beckstrom and Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, were shot by 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, identified as a former member of the Afghan Army who had previously served alongside U.S. Special Forces. Wolfe remains in critical condition, and his father, Jason Wolfe, has asked for prayers for his son. Both service members were deployed to the nation’s capital in mid-August following an order from President Trump to patrol the city and address rising crime rates.

Beckstrom, originally from Summersville, West Virginia, had volunteered to work in D.C. over the Thanksgiving holiday, according to Attorney General Pam Bondi, who noted that many guardsmen and women volunteered “so other people could be home with their families, yet now their families are in hospital rooms with them while they are fighting for their lives.”

Remembering Specialist Beckstrom

Those who knew Beckstrom remember her fondly. Her ex-boyfriend, Adam Carr, described her to CNN as a “loving, caring person” with a “huge heart.” At a vigil held in Webster Springs, West Virginia, one attendee told the publication, “I did not know a single soul here or anywhere that was as nice as she was or as caring. She really just made everybody happier.” President Trump announced Beckstrom’s death during a call with service members on Thursday.

Political Reactions and Scrutiny of “Operation Allies Welcome”

The shooter’s background has quickly become a focal point of political debate. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem revealed on X that Lakanwal entered the U.S. in 2021 through “Operation Allies Welcome”, an initiative designed to assist Afghan citizens who had collaborated with U.S. troops during their resettlement in the United States.

This revelation prompted a strong reaction from President Trump, who threatened to “reexamine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan.” When a CNN reporter pointed out that his administration had actually granted Lakanwal asylum in April 2025, Trump responded with a sharp rebuke, stating, “Because they let them in. Are you stupid? Are you a stupid person? Because they came in on a plane, along with thousands of other people that shouldn’t be here, and you’re just asking questions, because you’re a stupid person.”

The motive behind the shooting remains unknown as of Thursday, leaving investigators to piece together the circumstances surrounding this tragic event and its potential implications for national security and immigration policy.
