Kerala Man Wins Record Onam Bumper Lottery Prize, Verifies Win Multiple Times
Kerala resident Sarath S. Nair has claimed the grand prize in the 2024 Onam Bumper lottery, a life-altering win he initially struggled to believe. The Nippon Paints employee meticulously verified his ticket before sharing the news with family and depositing it at the State Bank of India.
Sarath’s initial reaction to discovering his winning ticket was disbelief. “Can’t believe it,” he reportedly said, recounting how he checked the numbers “two, three times” to ensure he hadn’t misread the results. He even sought confirmation from his wife in Alappuzha, emphasizing the need to be certain due to the serial number’s importance.
The winning ticket was purchased at a lottery outlet in Netoor, a location Sarath frequents on his commute to work. He had also purchased nine other tickets in the same series, entitling those holders to a consolation prize of Rs 5 lakh. The lucky ticket was obtained through the Attingal Bhagavathi agentsequur branch in Vyttila, Thiruvananthapuram. Remarkably, the agency itself had also sold the winning lottery to Sarath.
Following the initial shock, Sarath cautiously shared the news with his younger brother before informing his parents and other family members. He deliberately refrained from disclosing the win to colleagues, keeping the receipt secured at home until he could officially claim the prize.
“Has been taken by the lottery of the small amount,” Sarath stated, acknowledging previous smaller wins. “But the first time the bumper is taken.” He described the experience of checking the results on his phone as surreal, emphasizing the importance of verifying the serial number to avoid any errors.
Despite the windfall, Sarath expressed a measured response, stating he needed time to consider how to best utilize the funds. “It is determined that you can take thought,” he said, adding that he would consult with family and perhaps seek guidance from deities, as is customary in the region. While acknowledging the fortune, he also admitted to feeling “a little worry.”
Sarath, a 12-year veteran of Nippon Paints, purchased the ticket as a matter of routine. The agency that sold him the winning ticket was reportedly inundated with media attention on the morning of the announcement, with groups gathering at nearby banks anticipating the deposit. However, Sarath and his brother ultimately submitted the ticket at an unexpected branch in Southavoor.
