Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has banned the import of lorries older than five years. The decision taken by the Cabinet on the issue will come into effect from May 5, the Public Transport Authority said yesterday. This applies to all heavy transport trucks designed to carry goods.

Lorries, trailers and trailer heads weighing more than three tonnes will all come under the new decision. Age is calculated from January 1 of the year of construction. The new decision is based on fuel efficiency and environmental issues. The authority said the move was aimed at boosting the efficiency and competitiveness of the country’s transport sector and would help reduce maintenance and operating costs.
