Saudi Arabia has taken an unprecedented step in the Middle East and North Africa regarding the purchase of aircraft.

According to Saudi media, “Saudi Airlines signed a historic deal to acquire a huge number of electric aircraft, with the aim of enhancing its efforts in transitioning to sustainable means of transportation and improving the travel experience.”

According to the information, “the company contracted with the German company Lilium, during the Global Logistics Forum, which was held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, to purchase 100 electric aircraft, making it the largest deal in the Middle East and North Africa.”

The Director of Communications Affairs at Saudi Airlines, Razan Shaker, said: “The planes from the Munich-based Lilium company will provide direct links to difficult-to-reach roads along the Red Sea coast, and will also transport Muslim pilgrims directly from Jeddah to Mecca, which is not… It has an airport.”

She added: “Our strategy is to help connect locations and cities that do not have an airport, or that may be difficult to reach.”

Last July, Saudi Airlines announced that it would purchase 50 electric take-off and landing helicopters from the Lilium company, with options to purchase 50 more aircraft. The Saudi airline is expected to begin receiving Lilium aircraft, which can accommodate from 4 to 6 passengers, and flies up to 175 kilometers, in 2026.”
