In the Northern Borders Region, Astronomy and Space Club member Adnan Khalifa explained that the “Buck Moon” derives from North American Indigenous folklore, marking the time when male deer begin regrowing antlers. The SPA reported that these names, while rooted in cultural heritage, are not astronomically significant. The Rutab Moon has long been part of local folklore, illustrating the close relationship between agricultural seasons, celestial events and everyday life in the region,

The full moon’s visibility was enhanced by favorable weather conditions, allowing observers to spot lunar features like craters and mountain ranges with binoculars or small telescopes. This followed the June Dhu Al-Hijjah full moon—the final full moon of the 1447 AH Hijri year—which was also widely viewed in the Northern Borders Region under excellent observing conditions. Meteor Showers and Celestial Timing
The full moon coincided with peak activity from the Delta Aquariid and Alpha Capricornid meteor showers, according to Geo News. The Delta Aquariids, active from July 12 to August 23, and the Alpha Capricornids, active from July 7 to August 15, reached their zenith overnight from July 31 to August 1. Skywatchers could expect up to 30 meteors per hour, though the bright moonlight might obscure fainter streaks. Experts advised facing away from the moon to improve visibility. It is better to turn away from the moon and hide behind some objects like trees or buildings,
the report noted.
The Delta Aquariids result from Earth passing through the debris trail of comet 96P/Machholz, while the Alpha Capricornids originate from a different dust stream. The Perseid meteor shower, the year’s most active, is set to peak on August 12-13, coinciding with a total solar eclipse visible in parts of Greenland, Iceland, and Spain. Observers were urged to seek dark skies away from city lights, with no special equipment required for meteor watching. The full moon reached its fullest state at 10:37 a.m. EDT on July 29, Wednesday, according to the report, though it remained visible as fully round during moonrise just after dusk.

The upcoming Perseid meteor shower and solar eclipse in August will offer another celestial highlight. The August 12-13 peak of the Perseids, combined with the solar eclipse, presents a rare opportunity for astronomers. However, the full moon’s brightness during the July event underscored the challenges of observing meteor showers under lunar glare, a factor skywatchers will need to consider for future events. The solar eclipse on August 12 will be visible as a total eclipse in eastern Greenland, western Iceland, and northern Spain, with partial eclipses in the UK and parts of North America, where up to 90% of the sun will be covered.
