In the Middle Eastern country of Saudi Arabia, people who publish posts against the government have recently been given maximum sentences. Saudi Arabia is generally known as a country with strict laws in the world. In this case, there were reports that the government of the country is monitoring people who use social media. Following this, in the last few weeks, two women have been sentenced to several years in prison by the country’s court.
In this case, a few days ago, the Saudi court sentenced a woman named Noora Bint Saeed Al-Qahtani to 45 years in prison. He is apparently accused of “using the internet to disrupt the social fabric of the country through social media and violating public order”. However, information about his social media posts is not revealed.
Continuity penalties
Earlier, a Saudi court sentenced PhD student Salma Al-Shehab to 34 years in prison and banned her from traveling abroad for 34 years. Salma was doing her PhD research at the University of Leeds in England. Salma was accused of aiding and abetting those trying to disrupt public peace, civil and national security through Twitter after she returned to Saudi Arabia for a holiday. Subsequently, he was sentenced to 3 years in prison in the court case.
Following this, Salma appealed against the verdict. The Special Anti-Terrorism Court, which heard the case, sentenced him to 34 years in prison and banned him from traveling abroad for another 34 years. This was protested by women’s organizations and human rights commissions around the world. In this case, the fact that the Saudi court sentenced a woman to 45 years in prison is being talked about globally.
