No winter break for the two Roma camps in Saulx-les-Chartreux. This Thursday, the Roma families who illegally occupied land on rue Caroline-Roux had all left the premises before the intervention of the police planned by the prefecture in the coming days. On site, an excavator was already at work removing the boards and salvaged materials from the makeshift shelters subscribed to on site. Only a few hundred meters away, the land on Salvador-Allende Avenue was still partially occupied.

“A municipal decree ordered the evacuation of people illegally present on two sites, rue Caroline-Roux and avenue Salvador-Allende, due to a clear attack on public health and safety with proven risks of fire, pollution of soils and the spread of diseases due to the presence of rats, indicates the Essonne prefecture. In accordance with current regulations, a social diagnosis was carried out by the city’s CCAS, in conjunction with the state services concerned. Emergency accommodation was notably offered to the most vulnerable people. »

Associations denounce a lack of support

A version contested by representatives of the Intermèdes Robinson and Systèmes B associations who assure that no “social diagnosis” was carried out beforehand. “It is the volunteers and employees of the associations who are looking for solutions even though it is the responsibility of the State,” regrets Jennifer Garçon, member of Systèmes B who also highlights the presence of many families and vulnerable people .

Saulx-les-Chartreux, Thursday November 2, 2023. The Roma families who had taken up residence in this camp located on rue Camille-Roux left the premises before the intervention of the police.

On the grounds of Salvador-Allende Avenue, this Thursday morning, Mihaita is preparing to go and glean a few euros in front of the doors of the nearby supermarket. “Some have left,” he confirms, perched on his bike. But there are still people here, there must be another 20 or 25 of us I think. I have no idea where we can go. Tomorrow I will be on the street… I called 115 but there is no room. » According to the associations, before the threat of expulsion, around 200 people lived in this camp.

Flanked by a huge plastic bag full of clothes that he carries on his back, another occupant joins the conversation. “We have to leave,” he explains with difficulty. There, I help one of my cousins. We have to come back tomorrow because tomorrow they will destroy everything. » On the ground, men walk back and forth while children play between the makeshift huts. “We don’t know where to go,” concludes another. Maybe in Romania…”

We were unable to contact the municipal services.
