Residents Fight to Save Royal Djurgården from Disneyfication

A battle is brewing on the green island in the middle of Stockholm as residents and environmental activists fight to stop most construction projects at the Royal Djurgården in an effort to preserve the area’s unique environment. The goal is clear: to prevent the lush green island from becoming “a new Disneyland.”

Winston Håkanson, chairman of “Rädda Djurgården”, is leading the fight against the proposed expansion of Gröna Lund, a well-known amusement park on the island. Håkanson stated, “If you want to build something pie-like, then you have to do it somewhere else.”

The fight to preserve Djurgården has been fierce, with the Land and Environmental Court of Appeal approving the detailed plan for Gröna Lund’s expansion. However, the opposition has not backed down, with Richard Murray, former driving force behind the creation of the National City Park in 1995, joining Håkanson’s fight.

The primary concern is the proposed expansion’s potential impact on Djurgården’s unique environment, with plans for tall rides and commercial establishments raising concerns about preserving the island’s cultural and natural heritage.

The battle against Gröna Lund is just one of several conflicts unfolding on the island. Issues with the proposed expansion of the long-standing restaurant, Hasselbacken, whose new owner is ABBA member Björn Ulvaeus, have also ignited controversy.

The association “Save Djurgården” has been involved in various projects aimed at stopping construction and development in the area. These include protesting the expansion of facilities at Gröna Lund, reconstruction plans for Djurgårdsbrunn’s inn, and the extension of Villa Källhagen, among others.

Responding to the criticism, Parks and Resorts have emphasized their commitment to integrating the new fairground area with the surrounding environment. They have highlighted their plans to incorporate greenery and maintain a varied environment, balanced with attractions that cater to all age groups.

As the battle continues, residents and activists are determined to save the iconic island and preserve its unique cultural and natural heritage for generations to come.
