NThe highly controversial heating law has not yet been passed. But one thing is already clear: in the future, Germans should primarily heat with heat pumps. This may become mandatory for new buildings as early as 2024, and probably later for existing buildings. But these heat pumps are already being installed eagerly today. Manufacturers and craftsmen can hardly keep up.

Heat pumps are more expensive to buy than a classic heating system, but they also cost a lot to run. Because they use electricity. And not a little. An efficient pump with an annual performance factor of 4 (this is the key figure for efficiency) needs 5000 kilowatt hours of electricity to cover the typical heat requirement of a family in a single-family house of 20,000 kilowatt hours per year. The usual other power consumption of such a family is around 4000 kilowatt hours per year on average. With a pump, the house needs more than twice as much electricity as without.
